Barbie is known as a woman who is significantly rich, lives in a big house, goes shopping all the time and has a boyfriend.
Barbie is seen as a young, and
successful girl in her twenties, who is rich, has a condo, pools, a car, loves
to shop, and has a boyfriend named Ken. Barbie buys and wears clothes that attract
others to herself. Playing with Barbie, children,
teenagers and their mothers to look like her and they themselves would grow up
to be her. Girls get this sense of
feeling that in order to be successful in life, have people be attracted too
you, be able to have a boyfriend, that you need big breasts , big butt, but a
slightly skinny body. Barbie also portrays the idea that getting rich happens
significantly, when in reality you need to work hard everyday.
When I look at a Barbie doll, I don’t think of what it takes to be successful or as a model figure for young girls. Personally, I believe that it is just a toy for young girls, and even boys, to play with. A look at other people who could be portrayed in the Barbie doll fashion are celebrities like the Kardashian’s, Nikki Minaj, and actresses on the red carpet who leave little or no to the imagination. Similar to the observations of Barbie, these women are young, rich, have expensive things and material possessions, and are usually in the center of the celebrity dating scene. The only difference is these women are real and have a larger influence over the young minds of little kids. Their irrational appearances make plastic surgery seem ideal to people and have men dreaming of girls with similar body types. I think that toys are okay if they portray unrealistic body types, but how everyone is acceptable for women who undergo drastic body changes needs to be changed.
